Encounters 2020 tour suspended

The Australian National Maritime Museum has today announced the suspension of the circumnavigation of Australia by the HMB Endeavour and the companion touring exhibition “Looking Back, Looking Forward”.

The Museum is currently considering options for other ways to mark the anniversary, including through its online program.

The Museum has suspended the program to ensure the health and safety of the public and voyage crew given the current COVID 19 pandemic.

“This decision was not taken lightly. After 4 years of planning, this is disappointing but it is necessary at this time. I trust the public will understand and hope they engage with our digital resources instead” Museum Director, Kevin Sumption said.

The Museum is currently liaising with the communities the ship was due to visit and this week will commence the process of providing refunds to the people who purchased tickets for the voyage.

The Endeavour replica remains an important part of the Museum’s fleet and further opportunities to share it with the people of Australia will be sought in the future.

Mallacoota and Cann River 2020 Cook commemorations for April, HAVE been cancelled!

We have  heard from Mallacoota that because of continuing fires, the closed National Park and the recovery effort, that Mallacoota and Cann River have decided to cancel the Festival and the remaining events and take down the Festival website.
This district is still undergoing extreme problems and continuing fire events.
Parks Victoria have also closed Point Hicks and Tamboon Inlet plus the Croajingolong National Park due to fire risks in the area and road access problems.
It is not known when this will cease, at this stage.
Thus the Captain Cook Society (Aust) and New Zealand joint meeting planned for Mallacoota is Cancelled!
Thus we are activly seeking to re site the proposed CCSA meeting to a location where more people might be encouraged to attend, advice on this decision will be advised as soon as possible, subject to a location and bookings being found.
Apologies to all affected by this news, however our thoughts and prayers are still with the people within these affected areas, and their ongoing struggles and challenges!

Given the current public health directives from Federal and State Government, Council cannot proceed with the Meeting of Two Cultures event, planned for 29 April 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of first contact between the Gweagal Community and the crew of the Endeavour ship on the shores of Kamay Botany Bay National Park in 1770.

It has been a difficult decision to cancel this event, which marks a significant moment in our nations shared history. However, the health and wellbeing of all in our community has to be a priority in these challenging times.
